Summary

Richard Mayhew, a young Scottish expatriate residing in London, becomes entangled in an otherworldly realm after encountering Door, an injured girl lying on a pavement late at night. Despite objections from his fiancée, he assists her, an act that precipitates his gradual erasure from ordinary existence. Mayhew becomes imperceptible to the inhabitants of London Above, losing his home, employment, and social identity, while simultaneously becoming visible to the denizens of London Below, a subterranean, parallel society whose members are typically unseen and disregarded by the surface world. Forced to navigate this unfamiliar environment, he attempts to comprehend its logic, aid Door in evading the assassins pursuing her, and ultimately seek a means of returning to his former life.

Within London Below, familiar London place‑names acquire literal or symbolic reinterpretations. Knightsbridge manifests as Night’s Bridge, a perilous stone crossing shrouded in darkness that exacts a fatal toll on those who traverse it. The Angel, Islington is revealed to be an actual celestial being. The realm itself occupies the spaces beneath London’s streets and sewers, functioning as a hybrid of historical residue and fantastical invention. Its population comprises the homeless, displaced individuals from earlier eras, including Roman legionaries and medieval monks, as well as figures of mythic or imaginative origin.
