Summary
Benjamin “Beans” Baxter Jr. is introduced as an ordinary Kansas teenager whose life is disrupted when his father, Benjamin Baxter Sr., ostensibly a postal carrier, is transferred to Washington, D.C. Unbeknownst to Beans, his father’s position within the United States Postal Service is merely a façade. Baxter Sr. is in fact an operative of the Network, a highly classified government intelligence organisation in which he serves as one of its most effective couriers. His domestic life with his wife Susan and younger son Scooter conceals this clandestine occupation.
Baxter Sr.’s covert identity is compromised when he is abducted by members of UGLI (Underground Government Liberation Intergroup), a terrorist organisation led by Mr. Sue. To protect ongoing operations, the Network publicly declares Baxter Sr. deceased. Beans, however, learns the truth and is subsequently recruited by Number Two, who appoints him as a junior undercover agent. The Network requires an operative capable of moving inconspicuously within high‑school environments, and Beans is assured that he will be permitted to participate in efforts to locate and rescue his father. He is also instructed to maintain absolute secrecy regarding his father’s survival and his own involvement with the Network.
This dual existence generates significant complications in Beans’ personal life. His eccentric friend Woodshop becomes increasingly perplexed by Beans’ erratic behaviour. Cake Lase, the daughter of an ambassador and Beans’ tentative romantic interest, is repeatedly confounded by his unexplained absences and the cultural misunderstandings that arise between them. Beans’ assignments frequently interfere with their relationship, intensifying her confusion about both American customs and Beans himself.
