Summary
John Amsterdam, played by Nikolaj Coster‑Waldau, is an NYPD homicide detective who has lived for four centuries while retaining the appearance of a man in his mid‑thirties. His immortality began in 1642 when, as a Dutch soldier in Manhattan, he saved a Native American girl during the destruction of her tribe; she preserved his life through a spell that would only end when he found his one true love.
Amsterdam’s long life is shown through flashbacks that depict the succession of identities he has adopted, the personal losses he has endured, and the breadth of his experience. He has sixty‑three children, most of whom are unaware of his identity, and maintains contact only with his sixty‑five‑year‑old son Omar. A recovering alcoholic, he has remained sober since 1965. His varied career history includes service in multiple branches of the U.S. military, teaching university‑level history, practising medicine during the American Civil War, working as a craftsman and painter, practising law by the early 1940s, attending Columbia University, and serving in the CIA.
