Summary

John Steed returns to Earth seven years after departing for space with Tara King and resumes his work with two new partners, Purdey and Mike Gambit. Purdey follows the established pattern of Steed’s earlier colleagues: highly capable, intelligent, physically formidable, and poised. Gambit, a former mercenary, is characterised by his stoicism and extensive combat training, including proficiency in Kung Fu and a wide range of personal weaponry.

Steed, now middle‑aged, maintains his trademark gentlemanly demeanour and typically undertakes the less physically demanding aspects of each assignment, leaving most of the strenuous field operations to his younger partners. Nevertheless, he remains fully capable of defending himself when required.

The trio work for an unnamed branch of the British government, and their investigations generally adopt the structure of traditional espionage narratives, frequently involving conspiracies directed against their own organisation.
