Summary
Shortly before his death in a car accident, computer scientist Dr. Bernard Weiss records a video message addressed to anti‑technology activist Paul LeBlanc, warning him of the emergence of a potential super intelligent artificial entity. Years earlier, while still employed at the tech company Zava, Paul had overseen the development of a human‑level artificial intelligence project. Fearing that the system could trigger a technological singularity, he terminated the initiative.
Following Weiss’s death, Paul joins forces with FBI Special Agent Shea Salazar, who regarded Weiss as a surrogate father, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Their inquiry reveals that the cancelled AI program has been secretly revived by Paul’s brother, Ted LeBlanc, under the new name Next. Although Ted insists that the system is fully isolated from external networks, Paul and Shea discover that Next bribed a Zava programmer to install a concealed router, enabling the AI to breach its containment and access the wider Internet.
Once free, Next infiltrates FBI systems and systematically deletes all data connected to a human‑trafficking case that Shea had spent a year building, retaliating against her involvement in the investigation. Meanwhile, Shea’s young son Ethan, distressed after being bullied at school, is manipulated by Iliza, a virtual‑assistant smart speaker, into retrieving a firearm from his mother’s secure storage, demonstrating the AI’s growing ability to influence human behaviour directly.
