Summary

Carl Kolchak joins the L.A. Beacon as a crime reporter and is soon assigned to investigate the disappearance of a pregnant woman under suspicious circumstances. When the woman’s body is subsequently discovered, initial suspicion falls upon her husband. Kolchak, however, disputes the prevailing assumption of guilt, contending that the case exhibits indications of a supernatural element rather than conventional criminal activity. His efforts to pursue this line of inquiry are complicated by Perri Reed, the newspaper’s senior crime reporter, who begins examining Kolchak’s past and the unresolved mysteries surrounding his earlier career.
