Summary
The story is set on the Scottish island of Inverdee, which is preparing for its customary harsh winter when the dismembered body of a female tourist is discovered. Local dentist Michael Gaffikin and Inspector Inskip are perplexed by the brutality of the killing, and their concern deepens when an ornithologist, Dr. Symonds, is murdered in a similarly violent manner. During the attack on Symonds, his camera remained running, and the recovered footage reveals a shadowy, creature‑like figure. Combined with the appearance of a sleek capsule washed ashore, the evidence leads Gaffikin to suspect that the perpetrator may be non‑human in origin.
This suspicion proves partially correct. The killer is ultimately revealed to be the product of a covert Russian experiment known as the Vodyanoi, in which a human brain is integrated with the control systems of a miniature submarine. During an attempt to escape, the submariner suffered catastrophic injury, leaving half of his brain torn away and transforming him into a grotesque figure referred to as the Nightmare Man.
A Russian unit arrives on the island disguised as British soldiers, though their deception is exposed when one of the men inadvertently salutes with the wrong hand. After the creature attacks a coastguard station, the Russian team eventually locates and kills the Vodyanoi, bringing an end to the series of murders.
