Summary
The Phantom Agents are depicted as a cadre of modern‑day ninja operating under the authority of the Japanese government, primarily engaged in countering the activities of the criminal organisation known as Black Flag. In early episodes, the Agents are characterised by their distinctive pudding basin motorcycle helmets and their habit of travelling in single file on foot, a practice later replaced by the use of a Toyota Crown Saloon.
The Agents employ traditional ninja weaponry, including shuriken, and adhere to a strict policy of using firearms only as a last resort, a principle reiterated in the title sequence, particularly for the benefit of the team’s sole female member. Their abilities include leaping backwards onto tree branches and utilising camouflage techniques, such as holding a brick‑patterned cloth before themselves to blend seamlessly into adjacent walls, rendering them effectively invisible to opponents.
The series stars Joh Mizuki as Phantar, the leader of the Phantom Agents. The core team includes Tugor, Cordo, Zemo, and the female agent Margo, who is later replaced by Gina. A young boy, Tomba, also serves as an Agent. Additional members introduced later in the series include Andar, who appears to assume Tugor’s role, and Mundo, notable for his ability to curl himself into a ball and roll into adversaries. Tugor is killed by a bomb in one episode, leaving behind only a single boot, a moment remembered by viewers as one of the series’ more sombre scenes. Another Agent, Gino, is killed in the first episode.
