Summary
The series follows the Powell family, an ostensibly ordinary household experiencing increasing strain as Jim Powell struggles to connect with his wife, Stephanie Powell, whose career as a research scientist continues to advance. Their children, Daphne and J.J., face typical adolescent challenges that further contribute to the family’s fragmentation.
During a trip to Brazil, the Powells survive a plane crash that results in each member developing extraordinary abilities. Jim acquires superhuman strength and near‑invulnerability, which he employs to combat crime with assistance from his friend and defence attorney, George St. Cloud. Stephanie gains super‑speed and confides in her laboratory assistant, Katie, while the two undertake newly sanctioned research involving a mysterious plant species.
Daphne develops telepathic abilities that cause significant personal difficulty as she becomes overwhelmed by the intrusive thoughts of those around her. Although initially believed to be unaffected, J.J. later manifests heightened cognitive capacity, enabling him to process information rapidly and master complex concepts with ease.
