Summary
An experimental ageing compound is inadvertently released into the atmosphere, causing the global population to undergo rapid biological deterioration. Only four individuals, three men and one woman, survive, each having been physically isolated from the surrounding air at the moment of exposure.
The survivors comprise Brian Appleyard, an academically gifted professor with ambitious plans to rebuild civilisation. Brian had been enclosed within an airtight booth during a pub‑quiz competition when the compound was released, making him the only member of the group to witness the event directly.
Colin Garraty, a rugby player of limited intellect, survived by being submerged underwater at the critical moment. It took several days for him to realise that his friends were not deliberately avoiding him to evade paying the wager he had won in an underwater endurance contest.
Graham and Janet Wilkins, a married couple, were exploring a cave system when the disaster occurred. Graham is characterised as a home‑improvement specialist, while Janet serves as a somewhat eccentric scoutmaster. Brian’s intention to have Graham and Janet contribute to the repopulation of humanity is thwarted when he discovers that Graham is unable to father children.
