Summary
The narrative is set in present‑day London within an alternative historical timeline in which several West African nations unified seven centuries earlier to form the African Empire, subsequently establishing colonial rule over Europe. Following a major global conflict known as the Great World War, authority across the continent became divided among competing African powers. Mainland Europe came under the administration of the Malian Empire and the Moors, while Albion, comprising Great Britain and Ireland, and parts of Scandinavia remained under the direct control of the African Empire.
Russia and the Balkan states continue to resist African colonial rule, though their borders have been significantly reduced since the Great World War. The Ottoman Empire also persists in this timeline, maintaining territorial control over parts of the Middle East.
Albion functions as a self‑governing colony with its own Prime Minister and executive leadership, an exclusively Cross police force, and a military establishment that has only recently begun admitting a small number of high‑achieving Nought recruits. Despite this internal administrative structure, Albion remains politically accountable to the African Empire on the African continent. By 1950, racial segregation is strictly enforced, with individuals of affluent African descent, known as Crosses or daggers, occupying positions of privilege, while native Europeans, referred to as Noughts or blankers, constitute an economically disadvantaged underclass.
