Summary

Michael Wiseman, portrayed initially by John Goodman in the pilot and flashback sequences and subsequently by Eric Close, is a suburban New York insurance executive living with his wife Lisa (Margaret Colin) and daughter Heather (Heather Matarazzo). After being passed over for a promotion, Wiseman spends the evening drinking with his colleague and friend Roger (Gerrit Graham). Later that night, while standing on a subway platform, he is accidentally pushed onto the tracks and struck by an oncoming train.

Wiseman regains consciousness in the custody of Dr. Theodore Morris (Dennis Haysbert), the director of a clandestine government programme dedicated to engineering an advanced, biologically enhanced human body. Unable to fabricate a functioning brain, Morris salvages Wiseman’s brain from his deceased body and implants it into the newly created prototype. The procedure preserves Wiseman’s consciousness and identity but binds him to the project as an experimental subject, periodically deployed on covert operations and counter‑terrorism assignments.

Because of the classified nature of the programme, Wiseman is informed that he must sever all contact with his family; any attempt to reveal his continued existence would result in his execution and the death of anyone he informs. Despite these restrictions, Wiseman repeatedly seeks clandestine ways to observe or communicate with Lisa and Heather while concealing his true identity.

Throughout the series, Dr. Morris continues to test the limits of Wiseman’s physical and cognitive capabilities, subjecting him to ongoing experimentation. Wiseman is intermittently tasked with undertaking secret missions or intervening in criminal activity. Meanwhile, Lisa and Heather face financial hardship when the insurance company refuses to honour Michael’s policy, prompting Lisa to pursue work as a real‑estate agent.
