Summary
Neri is portrayed as a young girl possessing an exceptional affinity for the ocean, marked by her ability to swim vast distances and her superhuman lung capacity. She resides alone on an otherwise uninhabited island, where she sleeps in a nest constructed high in a tree canopy. Early in the first series, she forms a clandestine friendship with two Australian boys, Jason and Brett Bates.
The Bates brothers live at ORCA (Oceanic Research Centre of Australia), an extensive underwater research and environmental‑protection facility situated near Port Douglas, Queensland. At the outset of the narrative, their mother, Dr. Dianne Bates, has been assigned to ORCA to study whale song with the aim of advancing cross‑species communication. A substantial portion of the series is set within ORCA itself, depicting the daily activities of its inhabitants, including the school‑aged children of resident scientists such as Jason and Brett.
Jason first encounters Neri during a whale‑tracking expedition with his mother. While attempting to tag a whale with a harpoon, he is startled when a girl emerges from the water and positions herself between him and the animal, urging him not to proceed. Jason hesitates, and Dr. Bates ultimately tags the whale herself, though not in the intended location. She is angered by Jason’s failure and dismisses his account of a mysterious girl appearing in the water. Jason’s story is initially met with disbelief and ridicule from other children on ORCA. Brett becomes the second person to learn of Neri’s existence, and the brothers’ friendship with her remains a closely guarded secret due to Neri’s fear of contact with other humans.
