Summary
The Odyssey is inhabited exclusively by children, forming a self‑contained society within the down‑world. This realm is governed by a mysterious figure known as Brad, who presides from a solitary tower and enforces an idiosyncratic set of rules. Jay, newly arrived in the down‑world, retains only one tangible connection to his life in the real world: an antique telescope that once belonged to his father. The telescope had been stolen by members of a local tree‑house gang, and Jay sustained an injury during his attempt to retrieve it. He experiences a persistent sense of urgency, convinced that he must find a way to return home.
Within the down‑world, Jay befriends two children, Alpha and Flash, both of whom bear strong resemblance to individuals he knew in the real world. Alpha parallels his best friend Donna, a spirited rebel who uses crutches; in the down‑world, however, Alpha is no longer physically impaired. Flash represents the down‑world counterpart of Keith, a member of the tree‑house gang responsible for the theft of Jay’s telescope.
With the assistance of Alpha and Flash, Jay undertakes a search for Brad, believing that Brad possesses the knowledge necessary to send him home. The trio must evade Brad’s elite enforcers, who pursue them for violating several of Brad’s eccentric and often trivial regulations.
