Summary
On 7 August 2007, the space shuttle Odyssey undertakes what is intended to be a routine mission, carrying six individuals: four astronauts, a scientist, and a television news reporter. During the flight, the crew witnesses an unprecedented cosmic catastrophe as the Earth abruptly dissolves into a fiery mass and implodes. The shuttle momentarily loses control, resulting in the death of one astronaut. Convinced that no rescue is possible, the remaining five crew members prepare themselves for imminent death.
Their survival is secured by an inorganic entity known as the Seeker, who intervenes at the last moment. The Seeker explains that fifty other worlds have been destroyed in an identical manner, and in each case he arrived too late to observe the event or locate survivors. The Odyssey crew represents the first exception. Determined to prevent the disaster, the Seeker offers to send the survivors five years into the past, specifically to 2002, the year in which the series was broadcast.
Because physical time travel is impossible, the Seeker can transmit only their consciousnesses into their earlier selves. Before the transfer occurs, the mission commander learns a cryptic codeword associated with the catastrophe: Leviathan.
