Summary
The narrative centres on an inventor who entrusts a nurse, Gerber, with the secret formula for a newly developed gas. He instructs her to deliver this information to his son, Wilson, a New York police officer identified by badge number 444. Opposing them is the Frog, portrayed by Ferguson, a master of disguise whose criminal activities drive the plot.
Much of the action unfolds in settings reminiscent of Louis Feuillade’s crime serials, featuring sewer networks, concealed passageways, sliding panels, and other architectural contrivances associated with clandestine movement and sudden peril. Wilson, at fifty‑two years of age, exhibits a less vigorous physical presence than is typical of serial protagonists, resulting in many of the action sequences being carried by his police partner, Mower. Ferguson’s performance as the Frog is noted for its skilful embodiment of the villain’s deceptive and elusive nature.
