Summary
The series centres on Tom Crane, a writer who becomes entangled in a sequence of inexplicable and unsettling experiences. At the outset, Crane travels to Edinburgh to interview Drexil for a book on the occult. Drexil, an occult practitioner whose earlier experiments resulted in the death of a woman, warns Crane to abandon his investigation. Crane disregards the warning, a decision that culminates in the accidental death of his wife, Julia.
In the aftermath of Julia’s death, Crane is approached by Roy Martindale, head of Department 7, a covert government unit specialising in parapsychological research and based in Edinburgh. Martindale offers Crane a position within the department, and Crane soon begins working alongside his newly assigned assistant, Anne. Together, they investigate reports of paranormal activity, with Crane periodically encountering Drexil once more during the course of their inquiries.
Through Department 7’s resources, Crane also learns that his brother, Michael, possesses latent psychic abilities, further drawing him into the department’s wider exploration of supernatural phenomena.
