Summary
One Step Beyond was a paranormal‑themed anthology series created by Merwin Gerard and produced by Collier Young. Hosted by John Newland, who introduced himself as your guide to the supernatural and was also credited as our guide into the world of the unknown, the program presented dramatizations of events said to originate from documented historical accounts. Newland directed every episode and framed each narrative as an exploration of phenomena that appeared to defy conventional or logical explanation.
The series distinguished itself from other anthology productions by adopting a docudrama format. Each episode, running approximately thirty minutes, was presented as a straightforward reenactment of incidents purportedly drawn from the “human record,” a phrase used to imply factual historical grounding. In practice, many of the dramatized events more closely resembled urban legends adapted for television rather than strictly verifiable occurrences.
During its original broadcast on ABC, the program carried the corporate name of its sponsor, Alcoa, in its title. For syndicated distribution, the series was retitled simply One Step Beyond, with the sponsor designation removed.
