Summary
Other Space is set in the year 2105, when a multinational corporate coalition establishes the Universal Mapping Project (UMP) to conduct scientific exploration throughout the known universe. Among the organisation’s fleet is the UMP Cruiser, an ageing vessel previously used as the setting for a reality television programme. Seeking to renew public interest in its activities, UMP leadership appoints the inexperienced but enthusiastic Stewart Lipinski to command the Cruiser on its next mission. Stewart’s older sister, Karen Lipinski, is assigned, reluctantly on both sides, to serve as his second‑in‑command.
The Cruiser’s crew includes Stewart’s closest friend, Michael Newman, who is unexpectedly placed in the role of third‑in‑command rather than the senior position he anticipated. Stewart recruits Tina Shukshin as the ship’s navigator, motivated in part by his unreciprocated romantic interest in her. Kent Woolworth, son of UMP Chairwoman Helen Woolworth, is appointed science officer, a posting Kent openly acknowledges as an act of nepotism. Oversight of shipboard operations is provided by Natasha, the Cruiser’s computer system, formerly employed as a hospitality bot in a casino. The only seasoned member of the crew is engineer Zalian Fletcher, whose cognitive abilities have been diminished by long‑term radiation exposure. Zalian is accompanied by A.R.T., a robot stowaway who has taken up residence aboard the vessel.
During the crew’s inaugural voyage, the Cruiser is drawn into a wormhole and transported into an uncharted universe. Stranded far from home, the crew endeavours to navigate unfamiliar dangers, make new scientific discoveries, and ultimately find a way to return to their own universe.
