Summary
The Sterlings, promoted as a typical Southern California family, are transported into the parallel dimension known as Otherworld during a sightseeing visit to the ancient Egyptian pyramids. A rare planetary alignment opens a portal between universes, drawing them through. Upon arrival, they learn that the Great Pyramid was constructed not merely as a royal tomb but as a barrier sealing the interdimensional gateway, and that in antiquity travel between the two realms was commonplace.
In the present era, however, such passage is forbidden, and Hal and June Sterling and their three children quickly become fugitives within this unfamiliar society. Determined to return home, they attempt to reach the Capital Province of Imar, where the Supreme Governors possess the authority to send them back to their own world. Their journey proves hazardous, as they are relentlessly pursued by the Zone Troopers under the command of the Imperial Kommander Nuveen Kroll.
