Summary
Out of This World opens with Evie Garland celebrating her thirteenth birthday, an occasion of unusual significance, as she learns the truth about her heritage and the extraordinary abilities it confers. Evie’s mother, Donna, married Evie’s father, Troy, during his visit to Earth; shortly thereafter, Troy returned to his home planet, Antares, leaving Evie a half‑human, half‑alien child. As with many extra-terrestrial figures in sitcoms, Troy possessed special powers, which Evie begins to manifest upon reaching her thirteenth birthday. These abilities include stopping time, transforming objects, and communicating with Troy through a crystalline device he left behind.
Donna and Evie must conceal Evie’s developing powers from friends and neighbours while attempting to maintain an ordinary domestic life. Their circle includes Kyle Applegate, a former action‑film star who serves as mayor of Marlowe, and later becomes police chief after Donna defeats him in a re‑election bid; Beano, Evie’s uncle; Lindsay, her closest friend; and Chris, her boyfriend. Episodes typically alternate between conventional sitcom storylines and plots centred on Evie’s abilities and the challenges of keeping them secret.
In keeping with many youth‑oriented American sitcoms, the series emphasises moral lessons over humour. Doug McClure, widely recognised for his role as Trampas in The Virginian, provides comedic interludes as Kyle Applegate, the town’s eccentric mayor and later police chief, whose most notable acting role was the costumed crime‑fighter Mosquito Man. Additional recurring characters include Uncle Beano, Chris, and Lindsay.
