Summary
The series is an anthology primarily devoted to science‑fiction narratives, several of which are adapted from works by notable authors. Among the stories featured is Time in Advance, set in a future society where individuals exhibiting criminal tendencies may obtain licences permitting them to commit a crime pre‑emptively. Another instalment, The Machine Stops, presents an Edwardian‑era vision of a technologically dominated future in which humanity lives under the pervasive control of machines.
In Satisfaction Guaranteed, an ambitious executive departs on a business trip, leaving his wife in the care of a humanoid robot indistinguishable from a human being. The anthology concludes with Target Generation, which depicts a puritanical, superstitious, and insular community confined for generations within The Ship. The inhabitants live in fear of a recurring tremor, and only one man understands how to respond when it occurs.
