Summary
Outcasts is set in the year 2060 on the fictional planet Carpathia, a habitable world located five years’ travel from Earth. Carpathia has been colonised by successive waves of evacuees fleeing destruction and nuclear conflict on Earth. By the time the series begins, most inhabitants reside within Forthaven, a pioneer settlement established a decade earlier.
The Carpathian population remains largely unaware of Earth’s ultimate fate, receiving information only from the few evacuation transports able to survive the hazardous atmospheric entry required to reach the planet. Carpathia was named by its settlers in honour of the RMS Carpathia, the vessel that rescued survivors of the RMS Titanic disaster.
The narrative centres on Richard Tate, President of Carpathia, and the Protection and Security (PAS) team, alongside the Expeditionaries (XPs), whose responsibilities include planetary exploration and the retrieval of resources and medical supplies. With the arrival of CT‑9, potentially the final transport capable of reaching Carpathia from Earth, the series follows the lives of the established settlers, the integration of new evacuees into the Forthaven community, and the growing tensions involving those who live beyond the settlement’s boundaries.
