Summary

The Outer Limits was an American science‑fiction television anthology series created by Leslie Stevens. Broadcast for two seasons, the programme presented standalone speculative narratives that frequently explored themes of extra-terrestrials contact, temporal paradoxes, and the consequences of scientific advancement. Several instalments have since become notable within the broader history of science fiction television.

Among its most recognised episodes is “The Zanti Misfits”, in which an alien spacecraft from the planet Zanti arrives on Earth to deliver a group of extra-terrestrial criminals. In exchange for providing sanctuary for these convicts, humanity is promised access to advanced Zanti technology. The episode is often cited for its moral commentary on punishment, responsibility, and interspecies diplomacy.

Another prominent episode, “The Man Who Was Never Born”, follows a mutated human from the 22nd century who travels back to the 20th century. His objective is to alter the course of Earth’s history to prevent a catastrophic biological disaster that, in his timeline, has devastated civilisation. The narrative examines determinism, ethical intervention, and the fragility of human progress.
