Summary
In 1899, Sheriff John Grail of Texas was on the verge of apprehending the Harland Pike gang, a group of bank robbers with whom he had previously been associated. During the confrontation, an intense electrical storm abruptly transported Grail and the fugitives ninety years into the future, depositing them in Texas in 1986. Confronted with the unfamiliar social norms and technologies of the late twentieth century, the group experienced significant cultural dislocation.
Upon arrival, Grail and the gang used their remaining cache of nineteenth‑century gold coins to purchase the Double Eagle Ranch. They subsequently established the Double Eagle Detective Agency, an organisation intended to apply nineteenth‑century principles of justice to contemporary law‑enforcement challenges in the American Southwest. Although they adopted modern reproductions of their period clothing and continued to rely on traditional weaponry, they frequently encountered difficulties adjusting to modern procedures and expectations. Grail also struggled to manage Billy Pike, Harland’s impulsive younger brother, whose behaviour often complicated their operations.
Despite numerous armed confrontations, the group consistently avoided serious injury. Their primary point of contact within modern law enforcement was Lieutenant Maggie Randall of the Houston Police Department, who served as their official liaison and gradually developed a personal affection for Grail.
