Summary
In a near‑future world marked by escalating terrorism and civil instability, a covert government initiative identifies and monitors individuals known as Neuros, whose anomalous neurological mutations grant them superhuman abilities. Emerging within this climate is Jane Vasco, also known as Painkiller Jane (Kristanna Loken), a former top agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Vasco possesses exceptional physical resilience and mental discipline, traits recognised early in her life when her father nicknamed her Painkiller Jane for her capacity to endure extreme pain. Her abilities are further tested when she is recruited into a clandestine government unit tasked with locating, containing, and, when necessary, neutralising Neuros. The origins of the neurological aberrations remain unknown, and the manifestations of Neuro abilities vary widely, encompassing telekinesis, telepathic influence, and the induction of hallucinations.
During her first assignment with the unit, Vasco discovers that she herself has undergone an extraordinary transformation: she cannot be killed, although she continues to experience pain. This revelation intensifies her determination to understand the nature of Neuros and the implications of their existence.
Although seldom intentionally harmful, many Neuros are unable to control their abilities, resulting in significant collateral damage. To prevent widespread panic, the government maintains strict secrecy regarding their existence and operates a specialised containment team from an abandoned subterranean transit platform.
The unit’s core personnel include Andre McBride (Rob Stewart), the experienced team leader; Connor King (Noah Danby), a field agent known for his sardonic humour; Riley Jensen (Sean Owen Roberts), a technologically advanced surveillance and communications specialist; Dr Seth Carpenter (Stephen Lobo), the team’s medical and scientific authority; Joe Waterman (Nathaniel Deveaux), caretaker of the subterranean facility; and Maureen Bowers (Alaina Huffman), Vasco’s former DEA partner, who joins the unit after uncovering classified information concerning Neuros.
