Summary
John Reese, a former Special Forces operative and CIA officer, is depicted as a disillusioned and presumed‑dead figure living in obscurity as a vagrant in New York City. His circumstances change when he is approached by Harold Finch, a reclusive billionaire and software architect who designed a classified surveillance system for the United States government in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Known as the Machine, the system monitors electronic communications and video feeds to identify potential terrorist threats.
Finch recruits Reese to investigate individuals whom the Machine designates as persons of interest, providing only their Social Security numbers as identifiers. Together, they attempt to determine whether each individual is likely to commit or fall victim to a violent crime, intervening to prevent the event from occurring.
Their efforts are supported by Detective Lionel Fusco of the New York Police Department, a formerly corrupt officer whom Reese coerces into assisting them, and Detective Joss Carter, an ex‑U.S. Army lieutenant and former senior interrogator in the 4th Infantry Division. Carter initially investigates Reese for his vigilante activities but gradually becomes an essential ally in their operations.
