Summary
The narrative is set in an alternate reality in which human civilisation has successfully established permanent colonies on both the Moon and Mars. In 1991, the United States launched a generation ship designated Overture, intended to travel to a distant stellar system. By 2016, the vessel has been in continuous operation for twenty‑five years.
As the mission reaches a scheduled transitional phase, the incumbent command crew prepares to transfer authority to a younger generation of personnel. The process becomes strained when the long‑serving commander refuses to relinquish his position, resulting in escalating interpersonal tension throughout the ship.
Concurrently, crew members participate in regular sessions with an onboard therapy computer, an artificial intelligence designed to provide psychological support. Believing these discussions to be confidential, the crew remains unaware that their private reflections are being transmitted to Earth as part of a reality‑television programme.
