Summary
The Phoenix is an American science‑fiction television series centred on Bennu, an extra-terrestrial visitor discovered in a pre‑Incan sarcophagus unearthed in Peru. After the sarcophagus was transported to the United States for study, Bennu unexpectedly revived. Possessing fragmented memories, he recalled only that he had been dispatched from a dying alien world to undertake a critical mission on Earth, though the specific nature of that mission remained unknown to him.
Scientific authorities regarded Bennu as an example of an ancient astronaut and sought to examine him extensively, while the Peruvian government declared him a national treasure and demanded his repatriation. Recognising that his purpose on Earth was not to serve as a research specimen, Bennu escaped custody and began searching for clues that would reveal his mission. He carried an amulet that granted him a range of alien abilities, which he employed throughout his journey.
When The Phoenix returned as a regular series in early 1982, Bennu had uncovered additional information about his origins. He learned that he once had a partner, Mira, who possessed the detailed knowledge of their shared mission, an undertaking intended to safeguard the Earth. Mira, however, had been interred in a separate ancient Indigenous burial site, the location of which Bennu did not know. The series followed Bennu’s quest to locate her, during which he frequently befriended individuals and assisted them in resolving personal crises.
Throughout his travels, Bennu was pursued by Preminger, a government agent tasked with capturing him and returning him to scientific custody, adding an ongoing element of tension to his mission.
