Summary
Phoenix Five is an Australian science‑fiction television series that chronicles the missions of the galactic patrol vessel Phoenix Five, described within the programme as the most advanced spacecraft in the Earth Space Control Fleet. The ship’s crew consists of Captain Roke, a decisive and resourceful commander; Ensign Adam Hargreaves, an impulsive young cadet inclined toward action before deliberation; Cadet Tina Culbrick, noted for her compassion; and Carl, a computeroid who serves as the ship’s multifunctional robotic assistant. Together, the team travels between planets to safeguard citizens of the galaxy and counter repeated threats posed by two principal antagonists: the humanoid Zodian and the renegade scientist Platonus.
Zodian, aided by his computers Alpha and Zeta, aspires to become the absolute ruler of outer space. His schemes form the basis of many early episodes, culminating in his capture by the Phoenix Five crew after thirteen instalments. Platonus, originating from another galaxy, similarly seeks dominion, believing that universal rule under his authority would be in humanity’s best interest. Both adversaries frequently engage in extended dialogues with their respective computers, which serve as their primary sources of counsel.
Acting under the directives of the Earth Space Controller, the Phoenix Five crew routinely intervenes to thwart the ambitions of Zodian and Platonus. The series’ action predominantly unfolds aboard the Phoenix Five itself or on planetary surfaces that, due to production constraints, often resemble terrestrial gravel pits. Despite these limitations, the programme presents a variety of interplanetary conflicts, scientific anomalies, and moral dilemmas encountered by the crew during their patrol duties.
