Summary
Pirx kalandjai (The Adventures of Pirx) is a 1973 Hungarian science‑fiction television miniseries adapted from Stanisław Lem’s Tales of Pirx the pilot. The series follows Pirx, a cadet at the Space Academy, whose combination of absent‑mindedness and improvisational talent repeatedly places him at the centre of unusual and often dangerous cosmic incidents.
Across its five episodes, the narrative presents a sequence of loosely connected adventures. In the opening story, Pirx undertakes his diploma examination, accompanied by Glória, a young journalist documenting the Academy’s training methods. Their test flight proves unexpectedly hazardous when unidentified spacecraft obstruct their route, forcing Pirx to rely on quick thinking to avert disaster. Later, during a celebratory banquet aboard a luxury starship, Pirx becomes the first to detect that something is amiss with the vessel, prompting him to intervene before catastrophe strikes.
Subsequent episodes depict further investigations and crises, including mysterious accidents at the lunar Galileo Station, a perilous excursion to Mars, and inquiries into malfunctioning or compromised spacefaring technology. While Lem’s original Pirx is characterised by shyness and introspection, the Hungarian adaptation introduces a recurring romantic subplot involving Glória, whose desire for emotional connection contrasts with Pirx’s preoccupation with solving technical and ethical dilemmas.
