Summary

The narrative centres on a master watchmaker and his nephew, an avant‑garde surgeon, who collaborate to construct Gabriel, a mechanical humanoid of exceptional aesthetic perfection, animated only when wound like a clockwork device. To complete their creation, the two men implant within it the brain of Bénédict Masson, a death‑row inmate condemned less for proven guilt than for his physical unattractiveness and misfortune.

Restored to life within his new and strikingly beautiful artificial body, Masson undertakes a systematic pursuit of the true perpetrators of the murders for which he was wrongfully executed. His quest is sustained by his enduring affection for Christine, the watchmaker’s daughter, whose charm and kindness had once offered him solace.
