Summary
After the destruction of the Command Center, the powerless Rangers recover the intact Zeo Crystal, inadvertently dropped by Goldar and Rito Revolto. The Crystal leads them to a subterranean portal that brings them to the Power Chamber, where Zordon and Alpha 5 await. The remaining Mighty Morphin team, Tommy Oliver, Adam Park, Rocky DeSantos and Katherine Hillard, become the Power Rangers Zeo, assuming the roles of Zeo Rangers V Red, IV Green, III Blue and I Pink. Tanya Sloan joins as Zeo Ranger II Yellow, while Billy Cranston elects to serve as technical advisor.
The Rangers’ new adversaries, the Machine Empire led by King Mondo and Queen Machina, arrive to conquer Earth, forcing even Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd to flee to the M51 Galaxy. Goldar and Rito, rendered amnesiac, remain on Earth and are taken in by Bulk and Skull, who continue their misadventures within the Junior Police Force before later joining Lt. Stone’s detective agency.
As the Machine Empire intensifies its assault, the Rangers receive unexpected assistance from the mysterious Gold Ranger. His identity is revealed as Trey of Triforia, an alien split into three aspects who must temporarily relinquish his powers while recovering. An attempted transfer to Billy fails due to residual negative energy from the Command Center’s destruction, leading to Jason Lee Scott becoming the temporary Gold Ranger. This period also introduces the Super Zeo Zords, which ultimately destroy King Mondo.
Rita and Zedd secretly return from the M51 Galaxy, restore Goldar and Rito’s memories, and attempt to manipulate the Machine Empire through Louie Kaboom, who later rebels. He is defeated by Prince Gasket and Princess Archerina, who rule until King Mondo’s reconstruction forces their retreat.
Billy later suffers accelerated aging caused by earlier restoration of his natural age, prompting intervention from both the Zeo and Aquitian Rangers. He departs for Aquitar for treatment and chooses to remain with Cestria. Soon afterward, Jason begins losing the Gold Ranger powers, which are incompatible with human physiology. A risky procedure involving the Zeo Crystal restores Trey, allowing him to reclaim his powers. The season concludes with Rita and Zedd crippling the Machine Empire’s leadership with a bomb, achieving their long‑sought revenge.
