Summary
The Powers of Matthew Starr centres on Matthew Starr, a seemingly ordinary high‑school student who is, in fact, the crown prince of the planet Quadris, where he is known by the name Ehawk. Matthew is forced to flee his home world after the overthrow of his father’s peaceful government by a faction of tyrants. His guardian, Dehay, accompanies him to Earth and adopts the identity Walt Shepherd to ensure their concealment.
Walt’s principal responsibility is to safeguard Matthew and instruct him in the development of his emerging mental abilities, which are exclusive to the royal lineage of Quadris. These powers include telekinesis, extrasensory perception, and astral projection, all of which strengthen and diversify as the series progresses. Walt himself possesses no such abilities, serving instead as mentor and protector.
Upon arriving on Earth, Matthew and Walt attempt to assimilate into everyday life. Matthew enrols at Crestwood High School, while Walt secures a position there as a science teacher. Early episodes focus on Matthew’s efforts to navigate high‑school life, often using his abilities to assist his peers. His closest friend is Bob Alexander, and his girlfriend is Pam Elliott.
Midway through the programme’s first and only season, the narrative shifts when the government becomes aware of Matthew’s powers and seeks to employ them for specialised missions. As a result, Matthew and Walt are compelled to leave Crestwood High School, and the friendships they formed there, to undertake assignments directed by their government liaison, Major Wymore.
