Summary

A New York resident awakens to find himself in an isolated settlement known as The Village, administered by a figure identified only as Two. In accordance with Village custom, all inhabitants are referred to exclusively by numbers, and the newcomer is designated Six, despite his awareness of having another name and identity. The Village authorities insist that he resides there permanently and that the Village constitutes the entirety of reality.

Sixs objective becomes to determine the nature and location of the Village, the identity and authority of Two, and the reason for his apparent confinement, particularly given Two’s repeated assertion that Six is a free man. He also seeks a means of returning to his former life in New York. To do so, he must discern which residents he can trust, including 313, a physician; 147, a taxi driver; and 11‑12, Twos son.

Throughout his time in the Village, Six experiences recurring memories of New York, among them an encounter with a woman named Lucy. These recollections appear to hold significance for understanding the circumstances that led to his presence in the Village and may ultimately provide insight into the forces responsible for his abduction.
