Summary

The series established its narrative framework through an opening comic‑strip montage illustrated by Ty Templeton. Within this premise, Rick, an enthusiast of speculative fiction, becomes increasingly unsettled by news reports depicting global instability and resolves to leave Earth. From an orbiting space station, he transmits a weekly programme assisted by his computer companion Nan‑Cy (an acronym for NANo‑CYbernetic 3000). The production consistently integrated this fictional setting into its presentation, employing themed on‑screen graphics, ambient audio, and stylised cinematography intended to mitigate the visual monotony typical of conventional interview formats.

Each episode opened with a brief thematic introduction before transitioning into a curated sequence of interview segments. Rick engaged with a wide range of creators, including authors, illustrators, filmmakers, animators, and occasional futurists. The programme addressed an extensive variety of subjects, among them censorship, superheroes, humour, religion, fairy tales, Mars, cyberpunk, war, overpopulation, and sex. Episodes ran for approximately thirty minutes, uninterrupted by commercial breaks due to their broadcast on public television, and typically featured between six and fourteen interviewees interspersed with Rick’s commentary.

Over the course of its run, the series conducted and aired roughly six hundred interviews, forming a substantial record of contemporary creators and thematic discussions within the speculative and imaginative arts.
