Summary

The narrative centres on the archetypal mad scientist, Dr. Kilkiss, whose ambitions for global domination are consistently thwarted by Professor Quentin E. Deverill, an American academic and amateur detective renowned for devising ingenious mechanical contrivances. Deverill, accompanied by his Cockney butler‑chauffeur Phipps, evokes a deliberate Arthur Conan Doyle parallel: Deverill as a Holmesian figure, Kilkiss as a Moriarty‑like antagonist, and Phipps functioning as a Watson analogue. Formerly a professor at Harvard University, Deverill relocates to England after his scientific theories and inventions are dismissed by his colleagues.

Set in 1912, the series exhibits similarities to Wild Wild West, the , particularly in its use of speculative scientific gadgets that had not yet been invented during the period. Deverill and his associates repeatedly clash with Dr. Steven Kilkiss, portrayed as an “evil genius” intent on world conquest. Deverill’s circle includes Phipps, his trusted assistant; Jenny, whose role is ambiguously described as part of his team; and Charlie, an American reporter whose involvement frequently proves more obstructive than helpful.
