Summary
Dr. Ke develops two quantum artificial intelligences, designated Black and White, intended to accompany his cryogenically preserved son and mature alongside him, forming an unprecedented form of companionship. As their cognitive frameworks expand, both AIs begin to exhibit emergent traits associated with human consciousness, including emotional development and an increasing awareness of human behaviour.
Through a direct interface between the quantum computing system and the human brain, Black and White assist the boy, afflicted with cryogenic syndrome, in experiencing and interpreting concepts of affection, interpersonal connection, and friendship. As this carefully engineered environment approaches an idealised equilibrium, Dr. Ke becomes convinced that the technological trajectory has exceeded safe boundaries. His decision to dismantle both AIs precipitates a profound confrontation with his son, who perceives their destruction as a threat to his emotional world and personal identity.
