Summary
The serial continues the loose chronology of the Quatermass narratives. During excavation work at a site in Knightsbridge, London, labourers uncover an anomalous skull and an object initially believed to be an unexploded Second World War bomb. Professor Bernard Quatermass and his newly appointed military superior at the British Rocket Group, Colonel Breen, are drawn into the investigation when evidence emerges that the object is, in fact, an extra-terrestrial spacecraft.
The craft and its interior exert a powerful and malign psychological influence on many individuals who come into contact with it, including Quatermass himself. Through the course of the inquiry, Quatermass develops the hypothesis that millions of years earlier, alien beings, likely originating from Mars, had abducted early hominids and genetically modified them to possess psychic abilities similar to their own. These altered pre‑humans were subsequently returned to Earth, leaving a hereditary imprint that Quatermass believes has contributed to patterns of conflict, aggression, and racial division throughout human history.
