Summary
The series is set within Ministry of Research Centre No. 3, commonly referred to as R3, a government laboratory complex housing a team of scientists tasked with addressing a wide range of scientific and technical problems. The Centre forms part of Britain’s Ministry of Research and is directed by Sir Michael Gerrard, who balances the dual responsibilities of securing government funding and overseeing the diverse scientific staff under his authority.
In the first series, Gerrard supervises a large cohort of researchers working within R3’s laboratories. The second series introduces an almost entirely new cast, with only Gerrard and his secretary, Miss Brooks, continuing from the original ensemble. This later series shifts its focus to R3’s Consultancy Service, the organisation’s specialised trouble‑shooting division. The Consultancy Service operates with a smaller team, led by Philip Boult and supported by his principal assistant, Dr. Richard Franklin.
