Summary
In the year 2030, an international competition to achieve the first crewed landing on Mars intensifies, with China emerging as the frontrunner. By deploying a succession of advanced rovers and robotic landers, China surpasses long‑term American plans and positions itself to make what is anticipated to be the most significant scientific discovery in history: the detection of extra-terrestrial life. In response, the United States and its partners, including Canada, find themselves drawn into a renewed, high‑stakes space race, one considered even more consequential than the race to the Moon nearly seventy years earlier.
The multinational consortium accelerates its programme when China prepares to launch its final series of robotic missions. Determined not to fall behind, the coalition advances its schedule and commits to sending a human crew. Six individuals, representing Canada, the United States, Russia, France, and Japan, are selected for a demanding two‑year expedition. These four men and two women must function as a cohesive unit, confronting private anxieties and accepting the personal cost of leaving families and familiar lives behind.
Although rigorous training and exceptional resolve prepare them for the mission, the crew soon discovers that no amount of preparation can fully anticipate the unforeseen dangers and extraordinary phenomena awaiting humanity’s first expedition to another world.
