Summary
Set in the early fifth century AD, the narrative unfolds during a period in which the Roman Empire has extended its authority across much of the known world. Upon reaching a remote island governed by two rival families, the Romans encounter a divided population: one family aligns itself with imperial power, while the other resists in defence of its ancestral lands.
After years of violent conflict between the two houses, a tentative peace emerges when the son of one king marries a member of the opposing family. This fragile reconciliation is soon threatened, however, when the rival king is influenced by his wife, who secretly maintains an allegiance with the Romans.
A renewed confrontation follows, fought both through conventional means and through the use of supernatural abilities. Although the defenders ultimately prevail, the victory proves temporary, as further Roman forces are already approaching the island.
