Summary
Following the completion of twenty‑six episodes of Pardon My Genie, writer Bob Block developed a new children’s science‑fiction series for Thames Television. Centred on restaurateur‑turned‑eccentric inventor Robert Sommerby, the programme depicted his government‑funded efforts to construct a group of humanoid robots designed to emulate human behaviour and emotions. These machines frequently displayed traits associated with people, including the capacity to form attachments and, in some cases, to fall in love. One robot, KT, informally referred to as Katie, was characterised by exceptional physical strength and notable dim‑wittedness, to the extent that he became infatuated with a gas stove.
The series also featured Eric, a slim, blond‑haired android distinguished by his intelligence and technical proficiency. KT’s recurring catchphrase, I like it, Mr Sommerby… I like it!, became one of the programme’s most recognisable elements. In one notable episode, Eric was struck by a car and subsequently lost all memory of his identity and mechanical nature; during a medical examination, the attending doctor discovered that he could see directly through Eric’s head when inspecting his ears, underscoring the programme’s blend of humour and surreal science‑fiction.
