Summary

The series chronicles the ventures of scrap‑dealer Harry Broderick, whose construction of an improvised spacecraft, assembled largely from surplus aerospace components, forms the basis of a distinctive science‑fiction adventure that occasionally evokes the spirit of live‑action marionette productions such as Thunderbirds.

Broderick’s initial objective is to travel to the Moon and recover the valuable equipment left behind during the Apollo missions. To achieve this, he enlists two former NASA engineers, Fred and Mack, recruits the unconventional astronaut Skip Carmichael, and adds rocket‑fuel specialist Melanie Slozar to the team. Their extensive procurement of government surplus materials soon attracts the attention of the FBI. Nevertheless, the vessel, designated Salvage‑1 and informally known as the Vulture, launches moments before federal agents arrive at the junkyard. After overcoming a series of hazards, the mission succeeds, and Broderick’s group becomes celebrated as national heroes.

Following this achievement, Salvage‑1 becomes the team’s primary mode of global transportation, enabling rapid deployment to remote and hazardous locations. Subsequent episodes depict the group assisting an amnesiac robot (Mermadon), towing an iceberg to relieve a drought‑stricken island (Hard Water), undertaking a space‑rescue operation (Golden Orbit), attempting to depressurise an active volcano (Diamond Volcano), aiding a stranded extra-terrestrial visitor (The Haunting of Manderly Mansion), and rescuing a child trapped by an earthquake (Shelter Five). The series premiere features an encounter with a marooned scientist and a giant ape‑like creature on a remote island (Dark Island). Throughout these events, the team remains under the persistent scrutiny of FBI agent Jack Klinger.
