Summary
Second Chance opens in 2011, where Charles Russell, a middle‑aged man, dies in a traffic accident. At the moment of judgement he is deemed neither sufficiently virtuous for heaven nor sufficiently corrupt for hell. As a result, he is offered a second chance at moral redemption. Accepting the opportunity, Charles is sent back to 1987, where he is tasked with guiding and influencing his younger self, then a 15‑year‑old, towards becoming a more responsible and ethical individual.
The younger version of Charles, known as Chazz, is portrayed as a mischievous teenager living with his mother. His closest companions are Booch, a confident, streetwise youth reminiscent of the Fonzie archetype, and Eugene, a socially awkward and academically inclined friend. Chazz is initially uncertain how to interpret the sudden appearance of Charles, who adopts the alias Charles Time and takes up residence in the family’s spare room. Although Charles possesses an uncanny knowledge of Chazz’s life, his guidance, often delivered with a mixture of urgency and paternal concern, generally serves to steer the teenager toward better choices.
