Summary
The Second Hundred Years is a sitcom built around a classic man out of time premise. Its central character, Luke Carpenter, is discovered frozen within an Alaskan glacier, where he became trapped while prospecting for gold in 1900. Successfully revived in the present day, Luke is reunited with his son Edwin, now 67 years old, and his grandson Ken, aged 33, both roles portrayed by Monte Markham. The unusual age dynamic, in which Luke appears younger than his own descendants, forms one of the series’ principal comedic foundations.
The programme employs two major narrative premises to generate humour. The first concerns Luke’s efforts to adapt to contemporary society after spending nearly seven decades preserved in ice. The second involves the persistent identity confusion between Luke and Ken, who are close in age and bear a striking physical resemblance. This confusion is heightened by their contrasting personalities: Ken, a conservative and somewhat formal corporate figure, and Luke, an outgoing, adventurous, and markedly more liberal character.
Further complications arise from Colonel Garroway, the Army officer tasked with ensuring that Luke’s survival and revival remain classified. Luke, however, is reluctant to maintain secrecy, eager instead to explore and understand the modern world that has emerged during his long absence.
