Summary

The narrative centres on the protagonists’ efforts to recover seabed samples of Phenicium, a rare metallic element of considerable importance to space research owing to its exceptional resistance to extreme temperatures. Their principal adversary is Kurt Swendler, a former wartime U‑boat commander, who seeks their assistance when the unscrupulous leader of an international metals consortium attempts to monopolise the global Phenicium supply.

Joining the expedition is Janet Slayton, a teenager whose prize‑winning essay earns her a visit to Aegira. Her trip soon becomes entangled with the unfolding mission, exposing her to a series of acts of life‑threatening sabotage before the protagonists can successfully complete their objective.
