Summary
The Secret World of Alex Mack centres on a teenage girl who acquires extraordinary abilities after accidental exposure to an experimental chemical on her first day of junior high school. Alex Mack, who often feels overshadowed by her academically gifted older sister, Annie, is doused with the substance when a chemical transport truck nearly strikes her on her walk home. Soon afterwards, she discovers that the compound has endowed her with several unusual powers: her skin intermittently emits a glow beyond her control; she can move objects through thought alone; she can manipulate electrical devices; and she possesses the ability to transform her body into a liquid state.
Alex confides in Annie, and together they resolve to conceal her abilities from their parents and from the wider community, sharing the secret only with Alex’s closest friend, Ray. Annie, aspiring to scientific distinction, hopes that studying Alex’s abilities might one day lead to a prestigious research accolade.
The sisters learn that the chemical is designated GC161, an illicitly developed compound intended to allow users to eat without gaining weight. The corporation responsible for its creation is aware that a child has been exposed and has launched an extensive search to locate the individual, intending to study the physiological effects of the substance. As Alex appears unharmed, she chooses to remain hidden from the company’s investigators. Although she attempts to avoid using her powers to prevent attracting attention, she frequently struggles with the temptation to rely on them.
