Summary
Polly Flint is sent to live with her aunt while her father recuperates from a catastrophic mining accident that has left him paralysed. Deeply distressed by the separation from her parents, she soon finds herself further disheartened by the rigid household regime imposed by her austere aunt, Em.
Polly’s unhappiness begins to ease when she learns of the long‑lost village of Grimstone. She encounters Old Mazy, an eccentric local figure, who recounts the legend that Grimstone mysteriously vanished on May Day four centuries earlier, having slipped the nets of time. Captivated by the tale, Polly gradually becomes more accepting of her new surroundings. Her world expands dramatically when she meets the unusual inhabitants of the vanished village, known as the Time Gypsies, and befriends them. Through her involvement, she ultimately helps the displaced villagers return to their rightful place in time.
