Summary
Several centuries after a virulent pathogen eradicated the vast majority of the human population in the early 21st century, the surviving descendants, numbering fewer than two million, have universally lost the ability to see. In this post‑apocalyptic era, depicted in See, human societies have adapted to life without vision, developing new methods of communication, construction, hunting, and social organisation. These communities exist at a markedly reduced technological and economic level, resembling hunter‑gatherer cultures and medieval social structures. Knowledge of the former sighted civilisation has largely vanished or become mythologised; materials such as metal, concrete, and plastic are believed to be divine creations, and the very concept of vision is regarded as heretical.
The narrative unfolds within a region contested by two principal powers: the Payan Kingdom, whose capital is Kanzua, and the Trivantian Republic, centred in Trivantes. In the mountainous territories beyond these states, a pregnant woman named Maghra seeks refuge among the Alkenny tribe. The tribe’s chief, Baba Voss, unable to father children, marries Maghra and adopts her unborn offspring.
The children’s biological father, Jerlamarel, possesses the forbidden trait of sight and is pursued by the Queen of the Payan Kingdom for this act of heresy. Reports that Jerlamarel has produced sighted children initiate a widespread witch hunt targeting both him and his descendants. Baba Voss becomes responsible for safeguarding his family and the Alkenny tribe from the Queen’s forces, setting the central conflict of the series in motion.
